Tool theft is a costly crime and it’s all the more common as the nights get longer. The most effective way to prevent thefts is to park in a secure garage or empty tools from your vehicle every night. Unfortunately we know this isn’t always possible. If you can, park in a well-lit area covered by CCTV, or with the rear or side doors against a wall or sturdy railings to offer some measure of protection. Install an alarm system or consider using interior deadbolts that can be controlled manually or electronically. Thieves often break into vans by drilling around locks and handles. Professionally installed stainless steel plates can reinforce these entry points and make them less vulnerable to attack. Make sure you’re covered. Standard van insurance doesn’t usually cover tools left in vehicles overnight, so consider applying for specialist insurance that will cover tools in transit. If you notice something that doesn't feel right you can upload photographs and footage of suspicious behaviour to our Suspicious Activity Portal. Always call 999 if a crime is in progress. Help us prove stolen tools are yours: take photographs and keep an inventory of all the tools in your van, including serial numbers and distinguishing marks. Personalise tools by etching them with your initials or marking them with brightly coloured paint or UV pens.
