From 22 to 0 - reducing theft from motor vehicles in Merstham

A dramatic reduction in theft from motor vehicles in Merstham has been the result of proactive, problem-solving policing led by your local Safer Neighbourhood Team.

In early 2026, the local team identified that thefts from motor vehicles in the Merstham area were increasing and spoke to local residents about their growing concerns.

The team put their heads together to understand the root cause of the spike, increasing patrols and developing intelligence to uncover the full offending picture.
The team quickly linked the rise in thefts to local drug dealing and took strong action through multiple warrants, arrests and charges.

The result? From 22 reported thefts from motor vehicles in March to 0 over July and August.

The Safer Neighbourhood Team's strong community focused policing has recently been recognised at our 2026 Chief Constable's Annual Awards, where the team have been awarded Neighbourhood Policing Team of the Year. We're committed to continuing to work alongside our residents and partners to help fight crime and protect people.

As always, if you see any suspicious behaviour please make sure to report it to us. Even if a crime has not been committed, this helps build our understanding of the wider burglary and theft picture across the county. https://www.surrey.police.uk/police-forces/surrey-police/areas/campaigns/suspicious-activity-portal/
