Vehicle crime alert: catalytic converter thefts in Surrey

Hello everyone,

We are reaching out to residents in Surrey following a spike in catalytic converter thefts across our boroughs.

Offenders are commonly targeting vehicles in residential streets and public car parks. A catalytic converter is part of a vehicle's exhaust system. They contain valuable metals that are often stolen to be sold for scrap.

What to look out for:

A vehicle being unexpectedly raised by a jack.

The sound of loud drilling or grinding coming from beneath a car.

Vehicles parked nearby in a suspicious manner, sometimes with engines running.

If you witness a theft, please do not intervene. Suspects may be carrying tools and could resort to violence. Your safety is our priority, please observe from a window or a safe distance and call 999. If possible, note the make, model, and registration of any suspect vehicles.

How to protect your vehicle:

Speak to your car dealer about locks or guards approved by Sold Secure Gold

Park in a garage where possible, or in a well-lit and overlooked area

If you own a commercial vehicle or 4x4, park close to a wall or fence to restrict access to the exhaust

You should register your catalytic converter and consider marking it with a forensic marker to make it harder for thieves to sell.
