We are proud to have a workforce consisting of many amazing people in varied roles, including Special Constables. Being a Special Constable (SC) is more than just a volunteer role – it's an opportunity to make an impact while gaining valuable skills and experiences. Special Constables have the same powers (including arrest) as regular officers, they wear the same uniform and often work alongside each other. Many of our Special Constables enjoy the change of pace that this voluntary role provides them with, whilst being able to maintain their existing career outside of policing. Take SC Budden for example. SC McKibbin is also part of our Special Constabulary, and we recently caught up with him to find out more. 🚓Q: What inspired you to become a Special Constable? 👮A: I've always had a passion to help others. I wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone, to achieve something that I could look back and be proud of. I always wanted to be a Police Constable, but my career took a different direction. Being a Special Constable allows me to do both! 🚓Q: Can you share a memorable experience you've had? 👮A: Making some amazing friends during training and out on division is certainly memorable. Also, I can walk away from each shift knowing I made an impact on someone's life for the better – that is certainly something to remember! 🚓Q: How do you balance your life outside policing with being a Special Constable? 👮A: Balancing a full-time job and a family can always be tough. Being a Special Constable can be demanding, but being open with friends, family, colleagues and supervisors will help. 🚓Q: What skills do you think you have gained or improved upon since you became a Special Constable? 👮A: Training is designed to bring the best out of you and push your limits. It certainly did that with me. From just having a conversation to conflict management, each shift I learn something new which can be applied to my everyday life. 🚓Q: How do you feel your volunteering contributes to the safety of the community? 👮A: By volunteering, I am an additional resource that benefits the community. It also adds to the safety of my colleagues by having that extra officer available. 🚓Q: What advice would you give to someone that was thinking of applying to be a Special Constable? 👮A: If you have a passion for helping others and want to develop yourself like me, then I highly recommend applying! From day one of training to working on Division I felt welcome. The sense of belonging and working alongside colleagues that share your passion is amazing. 🚓Q: What do you enjoy most about being a special constable? 👮A: The rush of adrenaline from responding on blue lights is something else! But also, being that person helping someone in their time of need brings a great sense of accomplishment and satisfaction that I would not otherwise have in my everyday life. Each shift is different and lays out a new challenge for me to accomplish. Are you, or do you know someone ready to do something Special? Applications are now open.
