Behind the scenes at Surrey's biggest sporting event

Have you ever wondered about how Surrey Police manages the Epsom Derby?

It's the Force's biggest pre-planned operation of the year, with hundreds of officers, staff and volunteers deployed to help manage crowds at the course, ensure the roads are kept safe, and crack down on anti-social behaviour.

This year, Commissioner Lisa Townsend joined teams at the course for Ladies' Day - you can watch a video about her shift here.

Police from both Surrey and Sussex are involved in a range of functions at the festival, including:

šŸ”“ Planning

šŸ”“ Intelligence

šŸ”“ Drones

šŸ”“ Public order

Additional patrols were also deployed in Epsom town centre and the surrounding area.

Officers were given extra powers during the weekend to tackle incidents of anti-social behaviour, crime and disorder under a Section 35 Dispersal Order, which covered all of Epsom, Walton Downs, and Langley Vale.

Over the festival, four arrests were made.

The Commissioner said: "A huge amount of work goes on behind the scenes to make sure people at the festival and beyond have a safe, fun weekend, and I’d like to say a big thank you to all of those who worked tirelessly as part of this event.ā€
