Tandridge Neighbourhood Watch Newsletter

Bulletin 9 April  21st – May 7th 2025

Dear Residents

Thinking of selling your vehicle? Have you considered some quick checks you could make, to ensure your sale runs smooth and safely?

Our officers are aware of an increasing number of scams targeting vehicles for sale online. These offences can typically involve individuals visiting private sellers for a viewing and test drive, either distracting the seller or asking them questions which force them away from the vehicle.

We are reminding the public to remain vigilant online, and offer the following advice when selling your vehicle privately:

• Never leave potential buyers alone with your vehicle – consider organising to have someone with you when a viewing is arranged.

• Listen to any advice offered by a company through which you are selling – online platforms occasionally provide information on private buyers which might make you think twice about who you are selling to.

• If a potential buyer claims your vehicle is damaged and tries to haggle on the price, do not accept this and notify police.

• If you have a Ring doorbell/CCTV system, make sure these are activated and working prior to a viewing.

• Ask to see a copy of the potential buyer’s driving licence before they attend the viewing.

Tandridge Safer Neighbourhood Inspector

CRIME REPORTS IN YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD

PCSO Henry Pilbrow is one of two Surrey PCSO’s to have been awarded a certificate of recognition for her tireless efforts to tackle shoplifting in our community.

Following a rise in offending at a supermarket in Caterham, Henry worked to build and maintain a relationship with the local Tesco store to reduce crime. Her engagement and regular patrols have been instrumental in the reduction of offences being committed, as well as contributing to investigations which has seen several offenders arrested and charged.

Figures show that between February 2024 and September 2024, recorded crimes were at 29 offences. Since Henry started her regular engagement, this dropped to just two between October 2024 and February 2025.Throughout 2024, this store was one of the top 10 locations for repeat offending. Now, it no longer features in these figures. When asked what had changed to reflect this drop, the store manager praised Henry and attributed it mostly to her presence.

Henry monitored daily overnight crimes and took ownership to task herself with CCTV enquiries at the store to ensure that evidence was not lost, and investigators were able to progress the reports in a timely manner, thereby seeking to identify offenders early and ensure early arrests could be made.

Henry was involved earlier in the year when a group of females entered the store and stole a vast amount of goods via bulk shoplifting. She had the knowledge of their offending patterns and history and helped locate them all, along with the vehicle and the goods until officers were able to attend and arrest them.

Discussing the ongoing engagement, Henry said: "It was nice doing a job where you have been a part of it from the start and seeing it through to the finish. They'd been in numerous times and tended to go to Purley, Caterham, Horsham and sometimes Hookwood one after the other.

The stores set up a WhatsApp group so once hit they then warned the other stores. The offenders filled trolleys, but would go through the self checkout and buy something cheap, holding an old receipt so it looked like they had paid but had forgotten something. It went on for a good few months and the Tesco investigating team were putting packages together and working with us in regard to the group.

On the day (of arrest), I was in Whytleafe when one of the stores called to say the perpertrators were in. As they were telling me what was happening, I was putting it out over the air and getting units towards. I noticed a car down a side road nearby and something didn't look right. I couldn't believe it - there were four of them in a car hiding. It looked like there was only the driver, but something didn't feel right. I went over and spoke to the driver, saw the others in the back and asked for the car keys - it was pure luck that it was a cul-de-sac."

Tandridge Borough Commander Lyndsey Whatley added: “Henry has taken on a liaison and ongoing engagement with the store. This has been really positive with the relationship with the store.

“She has ensured CCTV has been obtained in a timely fashion. Her local knowledge has helped understand crime series and identify the OCG and the feedback directly from the store is really positive.”
