Advice following reports of distraction thefts in Epsom & Ewell

Dear resident,

We’ve been seeing an increase in reports of distraction theft across Epsom recently.

The most common type in the town centre is thieves following victims from the bank after cash withdrawals have been made, spraying something onto their clothing, then offering to help clean the substance whist stealing the money. We also see thieves advising of tacks on the floor of the car park or damage to cars whilst picking their pockets.

Thieves do not work on their own, they work in groups which can be over five people at a time.

Absolutely anyone can be caught out by distraction thefts, which are often quick, well-rehearsed often initially go unnoticed. Being alert and aware of your surroundings is important so here are some top tips:

  • Always remain vigilant with personal belongings in public. Whether you are approached, or your attention is diverted by someone, ensure all valuables are safe and refrain from having them in easily accessible pockets, as this can allow criminals to swipe them quickly while you are otherwise occupied.
  • Do not let anyone see you input your PIN. Use your free hand to cover the PIN pad to prevent anyone seeing your PIN as you key it in.
  • If you are interrupted or distracted by anyone when using an ATM, cancel the transaction and try to recover the card, and if the machine does not return your card, report it immediately to your card issuer.
  • Borough Commander for Epsom & Ewell, Inspector Tommy Pearson, said: “We want the community to be alert to the tactics these criminals use, and ensure they take the necessary steps to prevent falling victim to theft.

“Please pass on this messaging to friends and family, especially those who you feel might be at risk of distraction theft. If you or someone you know has been a victim of distraction theft, please report this to us.”
