Bulletin 8   March 28th – April 10th 2024

Dear Residents

You will read in this Bulletin that there were a number of vans targeted in Tandridge Borough over the last two weeks and thousands of pounds worth of tools stolen. We understand the impact tool theft has, not only on the victims of theft, but their customers, and local businesses.

I would like to like to share some steps you can take to reduce the chances of your tools being taken, and what you can do to help us be able to reunite your tools in the event they are taken.

To minimise the risk of tool thefts here are some steps you can take:

Install motion sensitive PIR/dusk ‘til dawn lights outside your property.

Use good quality fixings and a padlock to secure doors and anti-tamper screws in door hinges.

Fit a mains or battery powered alarm, lock windows.

Where possible, avoid leaving tools in vehicles overnight. If this is not possible, ensure vehicles are fitted with an alarm and immobiliser.

Use a forensic marking fluid such as Data Tag, Selecta DNA, or Smart Water (check out Secured by Design to ensure they are approved) and use stickers to let people know they are marked.

Keep a property list detailing the make, model, serial number, and description.

Take photographs of your property and note any distinguishing marks, including where and how you’ve marked it.

Register your property for free on https://www.immobilise.com, which helps us return your items, if they are stolen.

Find out more about keeping your belongings safe by visiting: https://www.surrey.police.uk/cp/crime-prevention/keeping-vehicles-safe

To report tool theft, please call us on 999 if a crime is in progress, or report via our website: https://www.surrey.police.uk/ro/report/ocr/af/how-to-report-a-crime/

CRIME REPORTS IN YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD

Our Neighbourhood Patrol Team and Safer Neighbourhood Team deal with a variety of incidents. Here are a few they dealt with since the last Bulletin and a Court result.

There were 25   Arrests in the period March 26th to April 7th   : Domestic Abuse / Violent Domestic Abuse 12, Violent Crime Other 1,   Criminal Damage 1, Harassment 3, Theft 2, Alcohol Related 1, Sexual Offence 1, Breach of Pre Charge Bail 1, Crime Vehicle 1, Breach of Community Protection Notice 1, Crime Public Order 1.

A man has been sentenced after shining a laser at a National Police Air Service helicopter whilst it was responding to reports of a crime in March 2022.

Surrey Police officers were initially called to reports of youths using weapons to damage a telephone box in Limpsfield on the evening of 21st March 2022. Armed officers responded, with support from the National Police Air Service (NPAS) to search the area. Whilst the NPAS helicopter was in flight, it was targeted with a laser. While officers were on their way to arrest White, he came out of his house and pointed an air rifle towards the helicopter. White was then arrested and later charged with shining a laser beam towards an aircraft and possession of an air weapon.

Paul White, 54 (DOB: 15/11/1969), of Oxted was sentenced to a total of one year in prison, suspended for two years, at Guildford Crown Court on 8th April after pleading guilty to the two offences. He was also given to a 12-month treatment order and rehabilitation requirement, and to pay a £156 surcharge.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

During the first week of April officers from the Tandridge Safer Neighbourhood Team were and about in Oxted Town engaging with the public and businesses to discuss their concerns for the area and to provide a visible presence and provide some reassurance to those enjoying the Town. They were also engaging with residents from a street in Caterham where Police had been receiving reports about ASB and drug related activities to see how these issues can be tackled and resolved. Just a snippet of a week’s work in Tandridge, working with the public to better the community.
