Making Guildford town centre safer for all

Over the past few months, Surrey Police, Guildford Borough Council, and Experience Guildford have been working together to introduce changes to help make Guildford town centre safer for all. Here’s an update on the changes so far (and those coming very soon):

  • Additional weekend patrols – There are now additional police officers patrolling in Guildford town centre at the weekends. They’re on hand to make sure we’re doing all that we can to make sure that the town centre feels safe for all and to respond to reports of crime within Guildford town centre.
  • Street marshals – Guildford Borough Council will also soon be introducing street marshals to the town centre on Saturdays and Sundays from 12:00pm-8:00pm. They’ll be on hand to help to reassure visitors and residents in Guildford town centre. They will also be able to enforce Public Space Protection Orders (PSPO) that are in place in the town. The street marshals will be wearing a light green uniform and, like our officers, are on hand should you have any concerns or questions, so make sure you say hello to them too!
  • Youth outreach work – Over the next few weeks, Surrey County Council’s Targeted Youth Support (TYS) will begin a youth outreach project. There will be youth engagement workers in the town centre as well as the opening of a youth room in the near future. This will provide a safe place for young people to visit whilst in Guildford town at the weekends.
  •

The street marshals and youth outreach project are being introduced through funding from Safer Streets, which was secured by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner. In Guildford, this funding is being used to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour within Guildford town centre. These changes are being introduced now, and will continue throughout 2024 and into 2025.
